Comminuting apparatus, for disposal of kitchen waste, comprises a shoot 8, Fig. 1, having a mouth closed by a cover 9 which is arranged to actuate a switch 16 controlling an electric motor 13 for the comminutor 1 at a predetermined degree of opening. Thus if the cover is opened beyond e.g. 30 degrees as by insertion of the operator's forearm, the motor is stopped. As described the comminutor 1 comprises an impeller 2 rotatable within a ring of teeth 3, supplied with water, ground material passing out via a drain D. The unground waste is placed in a hopper 4 wasted down with sparge water from a pipe 7 into the shoot 8. The switch arrangement includes a finger 15 coacting with a switch mechanism 16 fixed to the framework 17. A solenoid valve operated simultaneously with the motor may be arranged to control the water supply to the pipe 7 and to a further pipe 71 beneath the cover, and the motor and water supply may be further controlled by a time switch. A weir 19 may be provided in the hopper together with a plastics curtain 20 to prevent splash back and reduce grinding noise. In a further embodiment, a domed cover 21, Fig. 3, is carried by a handle 22 fixed in an annular boss 23 which is bolted to a hinge pin 26. The boss includes a cam 28 to actuate a plunger switch 29. Sparge water is supplied, via ports 30 in the hinge pin and the handle 22 of the cover, to a sprinkling nozzle 221, which sprays on to the underside of the cover.
