A cutting tool for lathes and like machine tools comprises a cutter and a horizontally extending shank in which the cutter is cylindrical or in the form of a prism with an end cutting face formed in a plane at right angles to the axis of the cylinder or prism the cutter being mounted at an angle approximately 45 degrees to the base of the horizontally extending shank. The cutter is located on its outside diameter in an interfitting recess in the shank.
