Abstract

1,033,870. Nailing-machines. K. REICH. April 21, 1965 [April 25, 1964], No. 16753/65. Heading B4C. A pneumatic nailing machine comprises a percussive piston 66, Fig. 1 (not shown), movable in a cylinder 3, which is surrounded by a chamber 89 connected with the compressed air supply line 58 and an inlet opening 105, a tubular valve 94 being provided for controlling the flow of air through the inlet opening. The valve 94 is controlled by air fed from the line 58, to a chamber 81 via passage 76, ball valve 73, passages 77, 78. A nail conduit 25 is pivoted at 27 in the machine housing and coupled to a control piston 36 which is provided with an extension 72 for lifting the ball valve 73 off its seat 75. In operation, compressed air is fed through line 58 and passes via ports 57, 59 into a chamber 61 thereby moving the piston 36 so that it pivots the conduit 25 into alignment with a barrel 8 in order to permit a nail 23 to be fed therein. The valve 94 is held in contact with a seat 92 so that air is prevented from entering the inlet opening 105. Upon depressing the valve 47, the air flows via the port 57, a groove 51 in the valve 47, port 46 into a chamber 45, thereby moving the control piston 36 to the position shown, whereby the conduit 25 is moved out of alignment with the barrel. Movement of the piston lifts the ball valve 73 off its seat so that the air passes, via a passage 76 and passages 77, 78, into the chamber 81 so as to lift the valve 94 off its seat and permit the air to enter the inlet opening 105 and so drive the percussive piston on its working stroke. During this stroke, the air trapped in front of the percussive piston is moved into an annular storage chamber 88; a valve 63 is operated by the piston at the end of the working stroke so as to actuate a nail feeding mechanism in readiness for the next working stroke. When the valve 47 is released the control piston 36 and ball valve 73 are returned to their initial positions and the percussive piston is returned by the compressed air stored in the chamber 88; the latter piston is retained in its inoperative position by means of a locking member.
