A diffuser for a discharge lamp fitting has a small vent arranged so as to permit a flow of cooling air over a small zone of the lamp envelope. The vent may be of a diameter between one half and the full diameter of the envelope and may be supplemented by an internally directed tube to bring the air stream adjacent to the envelope. Louvres or vents may also be provided above the level of the lamp. In a fitting containing multiple lamps a vent may be provided for each lamp.
