Abstract

1.032,813. Laminates and laminating. L. EIGENMANN. March 8, 1963 [April 13, 1962], No. 9251/63. Heading B5N. Elastomeric strip material for adhesive application to roads for traffic marking comprises a smooth high-visibility component exposed over a part only of its surface, the remainder preferably comprising a coarse non-skid surface occupying 33-49% of the surface. The first component may comprise two outer strips and the second a centre strip hot-rolled into the material of the first Alternatively adjacent strips of the two components may be joined edge-to-edge by hot-rolled backing strips, or two spaced strips of component one may be adhesively mounted on a backing layer, which may be, e.g., of cardboard, disintegrable after laying, or may be connected during storage by an adhesive layer subsequently stripped off. Cross-strips connecting the spaced high-visibility strips may be provided to facilitate removal of the strippable layers. More than two spaced strips may be provided. Compositions for making the components comprise (1) (a) butadiene-styrene rubber, polyvinyl chloride/acetate, calcium carbonate and talc, with or without coumarone resin as plasticizer and titanium dioxide; 1(b) butadiene-styrene rubber, butyl rubber, hydrogenated resin, neoprene, titanium dioxide, kaolin and calcium carbonate; 1 (c) polypropylene and above mineral materials; 2 (a) materials similar to 1 (a) and (b) but containing quartz powder or zirconium oxide. Materials used for covering or backing sheets may comprise vinylidene chloride and a polyester, or ethyl cellulose and polyvinyl chloride/ acetate, or cyclized rubber and a polyester. Adhesives used comprise (a) chlorinated rubber, hydrogenated resin, P.V.C., cyclized rubber and solvents, (b) ethylcellulose, a polyester and a polyvinyl copolymer.
