Abstract

1,032,119. Breath analysing apparatus. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1963 [Sept. 7, 1962], No. 34401/62. Headings A5K and A5R. A breath sampling apparatus comprises a breath sample chamber having a flexible wall constituted by a diaphragm movable by breath entering the chamber to expand the chamber to a predetermined volume, a breath inlet passage leading to the chamber and having a vent to atmosphere, a valve controlling admission of breath into the sample chamber from the inlet passage and which remains closed whilst said passage is open to atmosphere, means operated by pressure in the inlet passage to close the vent and open the valve to admit breath into the sample chamber, and a pump for actuating the diaphragm to expel the breath sample through a breath outlet passage connected to the sample chamber. The apparatus is heated by heater 10a till the temperature is above the dew point of the breath, which causes valve 9 to open to allow breath to pass from subject via filter (not shown) in tube 8, tube 7, metering valve 15 and tube 16 to dish 17. On dish 17 rests diaphragm 18 and disc 19 which is connected to arm 20 a lever pivoted at 21. Arm 20 is connected to inlet valve 4 of sample chamber by stem 5 and valve 13 in vent passage 12 by stem 24, which valves are biased to the closed and opened positions respectively. Arm 22 of the lever is biased such that sealing plug 25 seals tube 26. When air reaches dish 17 the diaphragm 18, disc 19 and arm 20 are raised which causes valve 13 to close and valve 4 to open thus allowing breath to pass into sample chamber comprising . cones 1 and 2 holding diaphragm 3 there between. The diaphragm 3 is raised till it presses against cone 2 after which the pressure in outlet passage 28 is sufficient to operate switch 30 to operate a warning light (not shown) indicating that the subject may stop blowing which causes closure of valve 4, and to operate pump 27a to force breath from the chamber via outlet 28 to alcohol estimating device 32 as described in Specification 1, 011, 929 The device 32 may comprise silica as carrier for a reagent prepared by adding concentrated or furring sulphuric acid to chromic anhydride and/or bichromates.
