Abstract

Carbon, graphite, or refractory metal articles are coated with pyrolytic graphite by radiation or induction heating the articles in a furnace in which a gaseous hydrocarbon atmosphere is pyrolysed so as to form an adherent, continuous homogenous layer of pyrolytic graphite on the articles. The gaseous hydrocarbon atmosphere may consist of pure methane or a mixture of methane and hydrogen or of methane and nitrogen. The articles are heated to 1600-2200 DEG C in a gaseous hydrocarbon atmosphere having a pressure of 2-20 mm. Hg. The articles may be machined bars of natural or electro-graphite having helices cut across them; carbon threads or fabrics obtained by the carbonization of cotton or viscose threads or fabrics; stamped refractory metal sheet; refractory metal block formed from pre-wound or pre-formed threads or wires, the refractory metal being Mo or Ta; a discharge tube grid having a Mo or Zr base and cage of Mo wires.ALSO:Carbon, graphite, or refractory metal articles are coated with pyrolytic graphite by heating the articles by radiation or induction heating in a furnace in which a gaseous hydrocarbon atmosphere is pyrolysed so as to form an adherent, continuous, homogeneous layer of pyrolytic graphite on the articles.
