Abstract
1,031,832. Automatic control of moving strip. HEURTEY, S. A. May 8, 1963 [May 8, 1962 and Aug. 6, 1962], No.18136/63. Heading G3R Variations of the vertical position of a moving strip of material are detected by the extent to which an edge of the material obscures a photo-electric cell, and a signal so derived is caused to correct the vertical position by controlling the attitude of a roller over which the material passes, a signal derived from a further photo-electric cell obscured to an extent dependent on the attitude of the roller being applied as negative feedback. As applied to the re-winding of sheet metal strip after heat treatment Fig. 2 (not shown) the strip is passed vertically between vertical rolls 11,19, shown in plan, which are urged together by fluid-pressure actuators 27 exciting horizontal forces at the top and bottom of roll 19. Vertical movement of the strip is detected by a light source and photocell associated with one edge of the strip after passing the rolls. Variation of the output of the photo-cell, which is normally half obscured by the strip when the latter is in its desired position, controls a reversible servomotor 32 which tilts a centrally pivotted frame carrying rolls 11,19 to restore the strip to its desired vertical position by virtue of the axes of the rolls being no longer at right angles to the direction of travel of the strip. To prevent hunting, follow-up signals are provided by a further light source and photocell influenced by the position of the roll frame, the two photocells being arranged in a bridge circuit the output of which is amplified. To prevent unnecessary operation of the control system by slits and cut-outs in the strip, a relay responsive to large unbalance of the bridge may temporarily disable the control system. Two further light sources and photocell units associated with opposite edges of the strip may be mounted on oppositely threaded portions of a lead screw the drive to which is automatically controlled to maintain the spacing of units in correspondence with changes in width of the strip. The photo-cell assembly controlling the vertical position of the strip is then carried by one of these units so that the centre line of the strip rather than an edge is maintained in a desired vertical position.
