Abstract

806,598. Automatic position control systems. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 4, 1956 [May 4, 1955], No. 12906/55. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XVI] An apparatus for transversely guiding a moving strip 1 comprises a roller 3 around which the strip passes, the roller being tiltable about the normal centre-line A-B of the oncoming strip, and means for detecting lateral deviations of the strip and for initiating the operation of means for controlling the degree of tilt of the roller. Lateral deviations of the strip 40, Fig. 5, are detected photo-electrically by a receiver 42 co-operating with a light source 41 so positioned that part of the light emitted is interrupted by the strip 40 and part energizes a photo-electric cell forming part of the receiver. The receiver 42 includes an electric bridge circuit containing the photo-cell in one arm, this circuit being balanced and the output from the receiver being zero when the strip is in correct lateral position. The receiver 42 is connected to an amplifier 43 which controls the speed and direction of an electric motor 44. The motor 44 drives a shaft 45 carrying a pinion 46 meshing with a pinion 47 on a screwed shaft 48 secured at one end to a bracket 50 on a frame 51 carrying a strip-engaging roller, not shown. Lateral deviations of the strip cause rotation of the motor 44 in the appropriate direction, thus tilting the roller to return the strip to its desired path. The shaft 45 drives a tachometer generator 53 which is connected to the amplifier. The tachometer generator transmits a signal to the amplifier 43 proportional to the speed of the motor 44, thereby preventing over-running of the motor due to its own inertia.
