Abstract

<FORM:1031764/C1/1> Highly dispersed oxides, oxide mixtures or mixed oxides of metals and/or silicon obtained from volatile compounds of these metals or silicon by known methods are surface modified by reacting the freshly prepared finely divided oxides under exclusion of oxygen and in the presence of 0.5-2 mols. steam per 100 m.3 surface with any substance A capable of reacting with the free or liberated surface hydroxyl groups. A, preferably 1.5 m.mol./g. oxide, may be an alcohol, aldehyde, ketone, alkali but preferably an alkyl- or aryl- or alkyl-aryl-halogensilane or -alkoxysilane, numerous examples being listed. Essential deacidification of the oxide to less than 0.5% by weight of hydrogen halide, dehydration to less than 0.9% water and dehalogenation is carried out prior to or advantageously simultaneously with the surface modification reaction. An inert gas, e.g. neon, argon, xenon, a hydrocarbon or tube 28 containing the fibres at a temperature of about 1360 DEG F. whilst a positive external pressure is applied in chamber 105 to the tube 28 and a vacuum is created within tube 28. To prevent any distortion, and, if required, to provide an attenuating force, as the tube 28 collapses inward and the fibres fuse together an upward force is applied to the top of tube 28 by attaching a weight 146 or a motor via a wire to a button on the closed end of tube 28. The combination is then annealed and cooled. The whole of the furnace is water-cooled by a tube 118 running around the outside. Fibres having a core of lanthanum flint glass and a cladding of a borosilicate glass, or a core of arsenic trisulphide glass and a cladding of arsenic sulphide glass, or a core of 1.75 m flint glass cladded with 1.52 m crown or soda lime glass may be used. The fibres may also be in tubular form without core parts or they may have central openings extending longitudinally through said core parts. Also the core may be formed from a suitable electrical conducting metallic material such as steel or an amalgam. Devices made according to the invention may be used in the face plates of cathode-ray tubes. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 925,335.
