Abstract

1,031,564. Latch fastenings. WILMOTBREEDEN Ltd. Dec. 28, 1962 [Dec. 29, 1961], No. 46557/61. Heading E2A. A releasable door fastening device comprises releasing means embodying a contactor lever 8 formed in two portions 9, 10 mounted on a common pivot 12 and respectively arranged for engagement by a release member and to act on an internal element 7 which must be moved to release the device, one of the portions 10 being slidable on the pivot from a normal position in which the portions engage and turn together to release the device to an inoperative position in which the portions can turn independently on the pivot and locking means 17 arranged to move the portion 10 between said positions. The pivot 12 is mounted on a back plate 1 which is fixable to the edge of a door and the internal element 7, which is a cam plate, is fixed to a spindle 6 which passes through a bearing in the back plate 1 and to its outer end is fixed a cam (not shown) which serves as a bolt for engagement with a keeper. When the portion 10 of the contractor lever is in its lowermost position one of its limbs 10b engages an upwardly directed limb 9b of the portion 9 so that when the portion 10 is moved by the release member (not shown), which is a push button, the portion 9 engages a limb of the cam plate 7 to turn the latter so that the cam is released from the keeper. The locking means 17 is a lever which is pivoted on the back plate 1 and which is connected to the portion 10 by a pin and slot connection at one end and at its other end to a link 19 connected to a sill control member 20 projecting from the inner door sill. Depression of the member 20 turns the lever 17 and this moves the portion 10 upwardly so that its limb 10b no longer engages the limb 9b of the portion 9, hence depression of the push button is then ineffective to release the cam 4 from the keeper. The push button has an eccentric which engages within a recess 13 of the contractor limb 10b and this eccentric is connected to a cylinder type locking mechanism fitted into the push button and when the locking mechanism is rotated the eccentric raises the portion 10 to the position in which it no longer moves the portion 9 so that in this position also the cam cannot be disengaged from the keeper. The other limb 10a of the contactor portion 10 has an abutment 27 which engages the limb 11 of the cam plate 7 should the door be slammed with the portion 10 in its inoperative position; this prevents a driver inadvertently locking himself out of a vehicle. The door can be locked without the use of a key by first depressing the push button and then slamming the door; this ensures that the abutment 27 is clear of the cam plate 7 so that the portion 10 is not displaced to its normal position when the door is slammed. The cam plate 7 has a limb 33 which is engageable by a limb of a bell crank lever which is connected to an internal handle so that the cam can be released from inside the vehicle.
