Abstract

970,537. Latch fastenings. WILMOTBREEDEN Ltd. Jan. 13, 1961 [Jan. 15, 1960], No. 1486/60. Heading E2A. A releasable fastening device for use with a vehicle door is adapted to be released and locked from inside the door by separate internal releasing and locking means and has a safety mechanism including a safety catch 25 by which it is controlled and which projects so that when the device is fitted the catch is inaccessible when the door is closed, the safety mechanism when in the safety position acting to prevent operation of both the internal releasing means and internal locking means of the device. The construction shown comprises a back plate 1 on which is rotatably mounted a multi-lobe cam 2 (not shown) which is adapted to engage a keeper, the back plate being adapted to be mounted on a vehicle door pillar and the keeper on the corresponding body pillar. The cam and keeper are generally of the shape and function and disclosed in Specification 871,895. Mounted on a spindle 3 of the cam on the inside of the back plate 1 is a cam plate 5 which has two arms 5a and 5b, the cam plate and cam being biased to the normal coupling position by a torsion spring 6 around the spindle 3 the ends of which are attached to the arm 5a and the back plate 1. Mounted on the back plate 1 is a contactor lever 9 one arm 9a of which is engaged by the stem of a push button 10 mounted on the outer side of the vehicle door and depression of which pivots the contactor lever so that an arm 9b engages the arm 5a of the cam plate 5 to pivot the cam plate and hence the cam in releasing direction. Pivotally mounted on a bent-up portion 14 of the back plate is a remote control releasing lever 15 and a remote control locking lever 16. The lever 15 is connected to the inside handle by a link 17 and when turned by the inside handle rotates the cam 2 to its releasing position. The lever 16 is connected by linkage 19 to a control button projecting through a sill on the inside of the door and when the button is moved to locking position the lever 16 is rotated and since its arm 16a engages a slot 21 in one end of a locking lever 20 mounted on the back plate 1 it rotates the locking lever and a portion 20a of the locking lever blocks releasing movement of the contactor lever 9 and prevents release of the device by the push button. Mounted on the same pivot as the lever 16 is a safety lever 24 one end of which is pivotally connected to the safety catch 25. The other end of the safety catch projects through a rectangular aperture in the back plate so as to be inaccessible when the door is closed. The catch is guided for sliding movement by an upstanding tongue 27 engaging a slot 26 and it has a bent up portion 30 which when the catch 25 is pulled out to its safety position engages the face of the back plate 1 to retain the catch 25 in this position. Movement of the catch to its safety position turns the safety lever so that an arm 24b is positioned below an upturned portion 15b of the lever 15 so that movement of the lever is blocked; hence movement of the inside handle cannot release the cam 2. An upturned portion 24c of the safety lever 24 engages behind a downwardly directed arm 16b of the lever 16 so that the lever 16 and hence the locking lever 20 cannot be moved to locking position by the sill button. In a modification the safety lever 24 is omitted and instead the safety catch 25 is formed to block, in the safety position, operation of the levers 15 and 16. In either construction if the sill control lever 16 is already in its locking position when the safety catch 25 is moved to its safety position the arm 16b of the lever 16 is engaged by an arm of the safety lever, in the first construction, or a limb of the safety catch in the second construction, and moves the sill control lever 16 to its unlocked position. The lever 20 is provided with a bulge 20b and during movement of the cam 2 to its releasing position is engaged by the cam plate arm 5a if the lever 20 is in its locking position and moves the lever 20 to its unlocking position. Specification 970,538 also is referred to.
