A wirebound box-making machine having bending means for forming a loop in the end of a binding wire attached to a box blank comprises a frame detachably connected to a vertically movable part of the machine, and a rotatable member for forming the loop carried on a support mounted on and vertically movable on the frame. The bending means is attached by an arm 40 of the frame 58 to a convenient vertically moving member of the machine supplying blanks with attached wire. On the upward movement of the machine member a tripping leg 86 strikes a fixed bar 88 and latches 76, 78 disengage so that a control bar 82 is driven down within its housing 84 by a spring 90 causing a pinion 54 to roll along a rack 56 and so rotate, by way of gears 48, 50, a spindle 42 carrying wire-bending pins 115, 116 to a position suitable for subsequently engaging and bending the wire. Downward movement of the machine member lowers the arm 40 and frame 58 and guide elements 114 attached to the spindle housing 46 straddle the wire and guide it between the bending pins 115, 116; as the arm 40 continues downwards the housing 46 becomes seated on the blank and the rack 56 drives the pinion 52 to rotate the spindle 42 and pins 115, 116 as indicated in Fig. 7 (not shown) and so loop the wire end 18. The downward movement of the frame 58 permits the latches 76, 78 to re-engage so that the whole bending means is lifted with the next upward movement of the machine member.
