Abstract
1,030,928. Liquid-liquid contactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. May 21,1964 [May 24,1963],No. 20935/63. Heading B1F. A liquid-liquid contactor comprises a column rotatable coaxially within a contactor vessel, wherein said column is provided with a portion of reduced diameter, said portion registering with a portion of the contactor vessel of increased diameter. In a specific embodiment, Fig. 1, a batch process is operated. A solution to be extracted is added to contactor vessel 11 by inlet 20 while valves 22, 24 and 26 are closed. The solution is added up to level 27 (static interface), and then the column 12 rotated at 50-250 r.p.m. whilst a solvent of lower density is added under pressure through valve 22. The shearing action of the column 12 and the vessel 11 breaks the lighter solvent into droplets which eventually coalesce in portion 17 to form a coherent layer at the dynamic interface 28. The rotation is stopped and the liquid system allowed to settle. Once the interface has dropped back to 27 the lighter solvent is run off through 26 whilst the heavier solvent is removed through valve 24. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown), an apparatus suitable for continuous operation is disclosed. In this second embodiment, the enlarged cylindrical portion 17 is replaced by a sperical portion in which will be the dynamic interface. The lighter solvent is continuously withdrawn from the top of the apparatus from above the interface whilst the heavier solvent is withdrawn from the bottom of the apparatus.
