Abstract

1,030,914. Telephone dials. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 2, 1965 [May 29, 1964], No. 22251/64. Heading H4K. The impulsing contacts of a telephone dial mechanism are provided by magnetizable sealed reed contacter which are caused to open and close during the return motion of the dial from a selected digit position by two rotating permanent magnets as each passes in front of the reeds. Each rotating magnet nullifies the effect of a permanent magnet which otherwise holds the contacts closed. The usual lost motion period is provided by another magnet mounted on a disc rotated through the same angle as the dial so that during the last stage of the dial's return movement this magnet comes near enough to the reed contacts to hold them closed irrespective of the two rotating magnets. Two further sealed reed units form the off-normal contacts of the dial mechanism and are closed as a second magnet mounted on the above disc moves away at the beginning of dialling. The magnetic axes of the two magnets mounted on the disc are mutually perpendicular to avoid interference in the magnetic actions.
