Abstract

1,030,785. Electrically-heated coffee percolators. PHILIPS GLOELAMPENFABRIEKEN N.V. Nov. 15, 1963 [Nov. 20, 1962], No. 45213/63. Heading H2H. A coffee percolator comprises a reservoir 1 provided with an electric heating element 3 connected in series with a positive temperature coefficient resistor 4 which automatically reduces the current through element 3 at a predetermined reservoir temperature, the circuit arrangement being generally similar in design and operation to that described in Specification 1,017,636. Alteration of the operating point of resistor 4 on its appropriate V/I characteristic, Fig. 2 (not shown), is arranged to occur when substantially all of the heated water in reservoir 1 has been driven into the vessel 2, the subsequent drop in reservoir temperature allowing the liquid coffee extract to return thereto where it is maintained at a desired temperature by suitable choice of the resistor V/I characteristics. For a constituent extracting process other than coffee percolating and requiring restoration of the liquid extract to a high temperature after its return to the reservoir, standard resistors may be connected in parallel or in series with the element 3 and/or the resistor 4 to obtain a desired characteristic and/or load line to cause the operating point of the resistor 4 to return to its former value after a period of cooling, thus allowing the current through the element 3 to regain its former high value.
