In a process for spinning multi-component filaments having a predetermined and controllable ratio of component distribution. A multicomponent stream of spinnable, unblended components arranged in a predetermined pattern is generated, and the stream is conveyed to a remotely positioned spinneret having an orifice pattern of predetermined geometric correspondence with the pattern of the stream, whereby the line of demarcation between two adjacent components is caused to intersect a chosen group of orifices at a predetermined position to thereby extrude a plurality of multi-component filaments. The components of the stream of solution or melt may differ on physical or chemical properties, or in colour. The components of the stream may be arranged in a pattern of e.g. concentric rings or in parallel layers. In one embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) a pipe-in-pipe mixer 10 comprises a plurality of mixing stages or elements 12, each element consisting of two inlets 14, 16 communicating with common outlets 18. Solutions or melts A and B are fed into chamber 20 through inlets 14 and 16 respectively under conditions assuring laminar flow. The resulting composite stream is surrounded by a further inflow of solution or melt A, and the resulting multi-component stream, in the form of concentric rings of A and B is extruded through orifices 24 of spinneret plate 22, which may be located five feet or more from the patterned stream generator. The ratio of components A and B extruded through each orifice may be varied, permanently or cyclically, by varying the relative pumping rates of A and B or by varying the correspondence between the geometries of the stream pattern and of the orifices. The configuration and direction of the conduit carrying the multi-component stream may be non- linear provided laminar flow of the stream is maintained. In a further embodiment only one mixing stage is used, the resulting composite stream consisting of a core A surrounded by a sheath B. In examples, self-crimping sideby-side bi-component filaments are formed from multi-component, streams comprising concentric rings of pigmented and unpigmented solutions of acrylic polymer in dimethyl acetamide.
