Needles, pins, and the like, surfacing and pointing.-Relates to apparatus of the kind in which the needles are carried round in a rotating carrierwheel composed of a pair of notched outer disks and a plain inner disk, the outer disks rotating at a different speed to the inner disk, so that the needles, as they are carried round past the grinding wheels, receive a movement of rotation on their own axis. According to the invention, one outer disk A is mounted on a hollow shaft within which is another hollow shaft carrying the inner disk B and the other outer disk is mounted on a solid shaft passing through the hollow-shafts. Rotary motion is communicated to the shaft of the inner disk, and this drives the shafts of the outer disks by means of a countershaft and spur gearing. The grinding-wheels or buffs N are carried in swivelling headstocks P, which can be adjusted angularly by worm and wheel Q, R, and to and from the carrier-wheel by an axial adjusting-screw; the headstock is mounted on a compound slide-rest. All the adjustments may be effected while the machine is at work.
