Abstract
1,030,287. Motor vehicle axles. LANCIA & C. FABRICA AUTOMOBILI-TORINO S.p.A. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 20, 1963], No. 30610/64. Heading B7D. In a motor vehicle driving axle providing for a low level floor when arranged as shown or for high ground clearance when turned through 180 degrees (Fig. 3, not shown), a frame 1 composed of three parallel tubes 2 carries at each end a housing which supports the wheel 19 and comprises inner and outer hollow members 30, 32 secured together to enclose reduction gearing 39, 40 connecting each wheel drive shaft 36 to an extension shaft 40a driven by one of half axles 45 extending from a differential housing 4 carried by the frame 1. The inner housing members 30 include triangular portion 30a formed with brackets 31 for attachment to the suspension members of the vehicle and with seatings for the tubes 2. Cylindrical hubs 33 seated to the outer housing members; 32 support bearings for the wheels 19. The extension shafts 36 are coupled to the half axles 45 by splined connections 40b which incorporate springs 43 to reduce " chatter." Brake discs 20 keyed to the half axles 45 are braked by pneumatically actuated calipers carried by the frame 1.
