Abstract

The properties of a butadiene polymer prepared by polymerizing butadiene with or without a minor proportion of a comonomer in the presence of a two-component catalyst comprising an organo-metallic compound of Groups I to III and a transition metal compound of Groups IVa to VIII, are modified by reacting the polymer in solution with a thiol carboxylic acid. The reaction may take place in the presence of a catalyst and molecular oxygen or a molecular oxygen containing gas, e.g. air. An inert gas such as nitrogen may be present. Specified thiol carboxylic acids are thioglycollic acid and alpha or beta mercaptopropionic acids, while the catalysts may be an amine, e.g. piperidine, benzoyl peroxide or other peroxides, peracids, organic hydroperoxides and azobisisobutyronitrile. The carboxylated rubber product may be vulcanized, e.g. with zinc oxide.
