Abstract
Derivatives of natural or synthetic rubber or of gutta percha are prepared by incorporating in the dry material or in a solution thereof a compound containing a thiol acid group, e.g. thiol naphthoic acid, or mono-, di-, or trichlorthiolacetic acid, the combined thiol acid in the derivatives being less than 5% by weight of the rubber or gutta percha. The derivatives are of enhanced durability and crystallization resistance at low temperature. Into a solution of natural rubber or into dry natural rubber on a mixing mill or in an internal mixer the compound may be incorporated in the presence or absence of a catalyst and with or without heating or ultra-violet irradiation. In an example a mixture of 10 grams of crepe rubber dissolved in 500 ml. of benzene and 0.1 grams of trichlorthiolacetic acid are heated in vacuo or in nitrogen at 100 DEG C. for 6 hours, and the rubber derivative precipitated with alcohol and extracted with methanol. In other examples, the rubber or rubber-like ingredients include dry crepe, dry smoked sheet, crepe solution in benzene, and gutta percha, and the thiol acid compounds include trichlorthiolacetic, a -thiolnaphthoic, mono-chlorthiolacetic, thiolstearic, thiolpalmitic, thiolbenzoic, and thioladipic acids.
