Abstract
Copolymers of a -fluoroacrylonitrile with one or more other ethylenically unsaturated compounds (many classes of comonomers are specified) are incorporated into compositions for use in lowering the pour point of lubricating oils.ALSO:The invention relates to novel copolymers consisting of units of a -fluoroacrylonitrile and at least one of the following monomers: alkyl acrylates and methacrylates in which the alkyl group contains 1 to 18 carbon atoms, aryl acrylates and methacrylates in which the aryl portion contains 6 to 10 carbon atoms, vinylidene cyanide, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, acrylamide, methacrylamide, N-alkyl-substituted derivatives of such amides in which the alkyl group(s) has (have) a total of no more than 16 carbon atoms, styrene and alkyl ring-substituted styrenes containing a total of not more than 20 carbon atoms, a -methylstyrene, o-chlorostyrene, p-cyanostyrene, divinylbenzene, alkyl-substituted divinylbenzenes in which the alkyl group(s) contain(s) a total of no more than 12 carbon atoms, trivinylbenzene and alkyl-substituted trivinylbenzenes in which the alkyl group(s) contain(s) a total of no more than 12 carbon atoms, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids in which the carboxylate portion contains up to 18 carbon atoms, vinyl alkyl ethers and sulphides in which the alkyl group contains no more than 18 carbon atoms, ureidoethyl vinyl ether, N-vinyl lactams containing from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, alkyl vinyl sulphones in which the alkyl group contains up to 18 carbon atoms, divinyl sulphone, N-vinyl-alkylene ureas containing from 5 to 12 carbon atoms, N-vinyl-carbazole, halogen-substituted olefins, and dialkyl fumarates, maleates and itaconates in which the two alkyl groups contain a total of up to 24 carbon atoms; and monomers analogous to those above in which the alkyl group is replaced by a cycloalkyl group. The copolymers may be prepared by polymerizing a -fluoroacrylonitrile and one or more of the above comonomers in bulk, solution, suspension or emulsion using peroxide or azo initiators (several are specified) alone or in redox systems; polymerization may also be initiated by high-energy irradiation, e.g. gamma rays and beta rays. In an embodiment, one of the monomers may be partially polymerized alone and then, after adding the remaining monomer charge, the polymerization process is completed. The novel copolymers are useful as bulk plastics, which can be cast or extruded, in solution and emulsion coatings, for forming fibres, and as lubricating oil additives. Examples illustrate the preparation of copolymers of a -fluoroacrylonitrile with (1) methyl methacrylate, (2) methyl methacrylate or methyl acrylate, (3) vinyl chloride, (4) vinylidene chloride, (5) sec.-butyl methacrylate or cetyl methacrylate, (6) acrylonitrile, (7) styrene, (8) styrene and diethyl fumarate, (9) a -methyl styrene, (10 2-ethylhexyl vinyl ether and (11) ethyl acrylate (with or without acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid, or acrylamide or methacrylamide).
