A switch has three consecutive switch positions, and switching between the two switch positions of either pair of adjacent positions in said series of three positions (the middle switch position of the three being common to both pairs) is in both cases opposed resiliently to a lesser degree than switching out of the relevant pair to the other position of the three. An indexing mechanism comprising a spring-pressed ball 17 co-operating with notches such as 18, 19, in a cover-plate 2, has ready switching between the two positions in each notch 18 or 19 but requires a greater switching force to move the ball 17 across the cross-piece 20 separating notches 18, 19. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown), including a pivotal arm 21, the ball moves easily from notch 25 to notch 22, carrying arm 21 with it, but a greater force is necessary to move the ball from notch 22 to notch 24 as the arm 21 engages a stop 23 and the ball has to cross over the arm 21 before entering notch 24. A similar action occurs with movement in the opposite direction from notch 24 to notch 25.
