Abstract
Granular detergent compositions may be prepared by mixing a granular sodium perborate composition with at least one soap or synthetic detergent ingredient. The granular sodium perborate composition is prepared by mixing particulate sodium perborate tetrahydrate with a minor proportion of a particulate anhydrous hydrate-forming water-soluble magnesium salt, causing the mixed powder to fall in a sheet and while falling to be sprayed with water, and subjecting the moistened powder to tumbling action to form loose agglomerates which are maintained without further agglomeration until the free moisture has been all absorbed by the magnesium salt, which latter preferably is anhydrous magnesium sulphate. The ratio of sodium perborate tetrahydrate to magnesium salt is preferably from 18:1 to 4:1 by weight. The amount of water sprayed on the mixed powder is preferably from 8% to 18% by weight of the mixed powder before spraying. From 30% to 70% by weight of the final granular sodium perborate composition is preferably retained on a 44 mesh B.S.S. sieve.ALSO:A granular sodium perborate composition is prepared by mixing particulate sodium perborate tetrahydrate with a minor proportion of a particulate anhydrous hydrate-forming water-soluble magnesium salt, e.g. magnesium sulphate, causing the mixed powder to fall in a sheet and while falling to be sprayed with water, and subjecting the moistened powder to tumbling action to form loose agglomerates which are maintained without further agglomeration until the free moisture has been all absorbed by the magnesium salt. The tetrahydrate may be that obtainable commercially which may include other perborate hydrates, and also minor proportions of other sodium borates. The ratio of the sodium perborate tetrahydrate to the magnesium salt is preferably from 18:1 to 4:1, and especially from 11.5:1 to 7.5:1 by weight. Preferably, the amount of water sprayed on the mixed powder is from 8 to 18% by weight of the mixed powder before spraying, and from 30 to 70% by weight of the final granular sodium perborate composition is retained on a 44 mesh B.S.S. sieve. The granular sodium perborate composition may be mixed with at least one soap or synthetic detergent ingredient to provide a granular detergent composition (see Division C5).
