Abstract

Porous sheet material is made by melt-coating a free-flowing powder composition of a thermoplastic resin and a leachable powder with or without other constituents onto a porous carrier web, the leachable powder thereafter being leached out, and constituting 45-75% of the total composition by weight and being infusible at the melt-coating temperature. The carrier web may be a woven, non-woven or laminated woven and non-woven, material and may be impregnated with a polyvinyl chloride composition. The preferred thermoplastic resin is polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl acetate. The preferred amount of leachable powder is 50-65% by weight. The powder particles should be between 50 and 240 B.S.S. mesh, preferably between 120 and 200 B.S.S. mesh. Another thermoplastic resin, for example, polyurethane elastomer, may be included to improve the abrasion resistance of the product. The leachable material may be sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, a surface active agent or dispersing agent such as sodium salt of an aromatic sulphonic acid, or hydrolysed starch. A small amount of a blowing agent, such as sodium bicarbonate, may be added. Plasticizers, stabilizers, pigments and any other desired additives may also be incorporated.
