Abstract
Flock having a coefficient of variation of length not greater than 50% is cut from uncrimped artificial filament tows by forwarding the tow, at least partially creased in a wrapping, along a shoot to a cutting means; the wrapping answers that all portions of the tow are forwarded to the cutting means at the same rate, the cut wrapping thereafter being removed from the flock. The wrapping may be of paper, preferably with a moisture resistant lining, e.g. polythene, which is caused to unroll under the tow as it enters the shoot, the paper being automatically folded and secured around the tow in the form of a tube. The cut wrapping may be removed by spike means mounted near the cutting means or by cutting the flock on to an angled vibrating sieve, the flock passing through the sieve to a collecting means. The flock made by this process may be projected electrostatically on to an adhesive coated backing material to form a pile fabric.
