A residual petroleum fuel oil composition consists of (i) a petroleum base oil having a viscosity of 5-250 c.s. at 100‹ F., a specific gravity (60‹ F./60‹ F.) of 0À85-1 and containing a substantial proportion (e.g. at least 40%) of a distillation residue, and (ii) 0À005-1 weight per cent based on the total composition of a mixture of an alkali metal naphthenate and an alkali metal petroleum sulphonate. A typical component (i) is a blend of 70 weight per cent of distillation residue and 30 weight per cent of gas oil, but kerosine may also be present.
