1,028,259. Ultrasonic wave couplings. M.E.L. EQUIPMENT CO. Ltd. Jan. 13, 1965, No. 1520/65. Heading H4J. An ultrasonic probe, useful for plastics welding, is in the form of a tube 1 having two regions 4, 5, each of uniform cross-sectional wall area. The region 5 remote from the transducer is of smaller cross-sectional area than the region 4 and the reduction in area is carried out over a short longitudinal distance by a step 10. In use, the step 10 is at or near a nodal point. Tube 1 has a closed end 3 of flared form to contact the medium to be acted upon. A coupling part 2, also of cylindrical form, has a solid region 6 with a screw thread 7 for connection to a transducer. A region 8 is of annular cross-section and a flared end 9 exactly fits tube 1. The composite device produces an increase of vibrational amplitude by virtue of the differing cross-sectional areas 6 and 8, and 4 and 5. End 3 may be contoured if a particular weld shape is required. The hollow interior may be evacuated or filled with coolant.
