1,028,027. Magnetic tape recording apparatus. RANK-BUSH MURPHY Ltd. Oct. 17, 1963 [Oct. 17, 1962], No. 39271/62. Heading G5R. Apparatus for recording electrical signals, such as television signals, on a magnetic tape as a series of transversely extending tracks, the tape being stretched across a gap in a guide, is characterized in that the gap is wider than 0À125 inch thereby reducing the variation in the pressure exerted between the record/playback head and the tape which would otherwise occur as a result of wear in the head. In one arrangement, Fig. 2, the guide cheeks 1 and 1<1> are separated by a gap of 0À25 or 0À3 inch compared with the normal 0À125 inch, and in this way the ratio of the angle alpha formed by the tape with a new head to the angle # formed by the tape with a worn head can be reduced from about 6 : 1 to about 2À5 : 1, with a corresponding reduction in the ratios of the pressure on the head, thereby reducing wear of the head. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the separation of the cheeks is reduced as the head wears, either to keep the angle alpha constant or to reduce its variation.
