Abstract
<PICT:1027679/C1/1> Phosphorus trioxide (P4O6) is produced from colourless phosphorus in a continuous reduced pressure process wherein colourless phosphorus after ignition with atmospheric oxygen is reacted with a current of nitrous oxide at a temperature between 400 DEG and 675 DEG C. and under a pressure of 10 to 120 mm. Hg. The phosphorus trioxide is isolated by cooling the gaseous mixture obtained to 0 DEG to 30 DEG C. In the embodiment of the drawing, molten phosphorus is introduced into vessel 1 through inlet 3 and air is drawn through the apparatus from 3 until the phosphorus ignites. The air supply is cut off and nitrous oxide is introduced through 4 at such a rate that the reaction temperature is maintained at 550 DEG to 600 DEG C. The phosphorus trioxide is collected in cooled separators 6.
