Abstract

1,027,527. Aircraft arresting gear. MINISTER OF AVIATION. Dec. 31, 1964 [Jan. 2, 1964; July 10, 1964], No. 171/64. Heading B7G. Aircraft arrester gear comprises a housing 10, Fig. 1 (not shown) containing a spray tube 12, that is, a liquid filled tube through which a piston 18 is drawn by a cable 19 engaged by an aircraft, to displace the liquid through orifices 13. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the spray tube is shown with flanges 14 which run, either directly as shown, or through wheels, on guides 15 to allow the tube to be withdrawn for servicing, and which support the tube against buckling. The housing is filled with water to a line W.L. to submerge the tube and may be formed by a trough with a deflector to retain the expelled liquid in the trough, or a tube having an opening 29 above the water line for a resetting cable 21, a closed tube 51, Fig. 5 (not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown) the orifices in the spray tube have non-return valves 54, and movement of the piston 55 causes liquid to be expelled from the tube 52 and housing 51, through a non-return valve 62 to an accumulator 63, the influx of liquid causing air in the accumulator to be pressurized. The piston is reset by opening a valve 66 to allow the air pressure to return the displaced liquid to the tube. The arresting cables A, B in Fig. 5 may be connected to one piston, by passing them around the pulleys 69, or to the pistons of two spray tubes, as shown. The piston may be reset by a steel tape 87, Fig. 6 (not shown) connected to the piston 84 by a swivel coupling 86, which allows the piston to twist without the tape doing so. The tape is wound on a reel 90 having upstanding side guards 95, and a disc brake 97.
