Abstract

1,027,348. Rotational casting apparatus. McNEIL CORPORATION. July 31, 1963 [Aug. 23, 1962], No. 30344/63. Heading B5A. A rotational casting apparatus comprises a plurality of mould-carrying arms 120 extending radially of a rotatable turret, each of the arms including inner and outer rotatable shafts 128, 136 carrying drums 130, 135 respectively, these drums being adapted to be driven by a plurality of resilient drive means, and one of the drive means being located so as frictionally to engage one of the drums and the turret. Mould carriers 12 are attached to a cross-shaft 141 rotatably journalled within a block 140 mounted on the outer end of each shaft 128. The shaft 136 carries a mitre gear 143 which meshes with a gear 142 on the shaft 141. Thus rotation of the outer shaft 143 causes rotation of the moulds on a transverse axis, and rotation of the inner shaft causes the block 140 to rotate on the major axis. The moulds pass through a stripping and loading station A, a curing station B and a cooling station C. As shown, the resilient drive means for the drums 130, 135 comprises pneumatic tyres 52, 82, 86, 112, 116, but a resilient solid tyre may be used. At station A (Fig. 3, not shown), only one drive (52) is provided which engages the drum 130 for rotation of the moulds about the major axis. The curing station (Fig. 4, not shown) has two tyres 86, 82 which engage with the drums 130, 135 respectively to produce major and minor axis rotation. At station C (Fig. 5, not shown) there are two tyres 112, 116, the one which engages the drum 130 being positioned so as to be engageable with the under surface 121a of the turret to cause rotation of the turret when a turret index and lock mechanism 160 (Fig. 6, not shown) is released. This mechanism co-operates with notches 152 in the plate 121 to maintain the turret and arms 120 in their operative positions.
