Abstract

1,027,250. Cleaning engine sumps; dispensing liquids. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Jan. 9, 1964 [Feb. 1, 1963], No. 1022/64. Heading A4T. Electronic sequential switching apparatus for replacing used oil in a lubricant case comprise a suction pump 2, Fig. 6, acting with valves 31, 37 respectively open and closed which withdraws oil via hose 1, connected at 16 to the drain plug, a dip stick guide or other side opening of the case through a three-way valve 33 to a transparent container 3 for examination and, if usable, returned by air pressure with valves 31, 37 respectively closed and open at 6, to the case or, if unusable, passed to a slop oil container at 7 after which new oil metered by a content displacement pump at 4 and segregated in a transparent container 5 is forced by the pressure at 6 into the case with valves 48, 49 open and valve 62 closed through a new position of the three-way valve. The electronic system has a timing device whereby suction continues for a while after the removal of oil in order to remove foreign, material, and contains relays, solenoid valves stepping switches rectifiers for operating solenoid valves 31, 37, 48, 49, 63, 64 and a motor 52 driving cam 53 operating switches 54, 57, 60 controlling valve 33. Oil enters the containers 3, 5 by pipes 18, 17, Fig. 2; switches 9 control the draining of used oil, the adding of new oil, the refilling of the used oil, automatic operation and resetting; dial 10 selects the grade of new oil and dial 11 the quantity entering container 5, gauge 12 indicates air pressure, gauge 13 the new oil pressure downstream of the pump 4, gauge 14 the degree of vacuum and a bank of lights 15 indicates the number of pints of oil added to container 5. Containers 3, 5 are dispensed with for captive customers, egtaxi fleets. Means may also be provided for by passing the withdrawal of oil sequence to effect only the addition of oil.
