Abstract

Graft, block and cross-linked polymers are made by bringing together (a) a free-radical polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated material, (b) a preformed polymer which is soluble in or swollen by the ethylenic material or a liquid miscible therewith, and which polymer contains a CX3 group, where X represents chlorine or bromine, and (c) a metal carbonyl, under such conditions as to cause a thermal or photochemical reaction. The Examples describe: (1) forming a network structure by reaction between trichloroacetylated polyvinyl alcohol, methyl methacrylate and molybdenum hexacarbonyl; (2) as in (1) but using styrene as the ethylenic material; (3) as in (1) but using manganese pentacarbonyl as the metal carbonyl, (4) forming a gelled product by reaction between polyvinyl trichloroacetate, styrene and manganese pentacarbonyl under exposure to sunlight; (5) forming a graft polymer by reaction between polychloral, methyl methacrylate and molybdenum pentacarbonyl; and (6) forming a block polymer by reaction between a telomer of styrene and carbon tetrabromide, methyl methacrylate and molybdenum pentacarbonyl, followed by the alkaline alcoholysis of the resulting product.
