Abstract
1,026,969. Liquid fuel burners. MASTER CONSOLIDATED Inc. Oct. 16, 1964 [Oct. 17, 1963], No. 42302/64. Heading F4T. A portable space heater comprises an electric motor 23 driving an air pump 34 supplying air to a burner head 51 comprising an atomizing nozzle 79, Fig. 7, the air drawing fuel into the nozzle from a tank 10 mounted below the nozzle and atomizing the fuel. The atomized fuel is ignited by a spark igniter and burns in a combustion chamber 121. A fan 33 also driven by the electric motor supplies air to an annular space 118 surrounding the combustion chamber and also to a space 71, Fig. 7, surrounding the fuel nozzle and provided with arcuate swirl fingers. The air pump comprises a rotor having four slidable radial vanes, the ends of which abut an eccentric ring having an air inlet. The air is discharged tangentially into a cylindrical recess in the burner head 51 containing a tubular felt filter 57, Fig. 7, with longitudinal ribs forming air passages. The air passes through the filter 57 into the inside thereof and then passes through a disc-shaped polyurethane filter 56 to a passage 78 leading to a recess 73 into which the fuel nozzle is screwed. A pressure relief valve 63 is disposed inside the filter 57. The air enters the nozzle through grooves 85 and passes through swirl passages leading to a fuel flow passage in the nozzle. The nozzle is sealed in the recess 73 by a tubular tapered washer 82 which is distorted by a coil spring 84 to cause it to expand transversely. The fuel is fed from the tank 10 to the nozzle by a hose 91 including a cylindrical filter 92. The spark igniter is mounted in a hole in the burner head and comprises an insulated electrode and a wire earthing element having a V-shaped portion forming a spark gap with the insulated electrode. The electric motor, the air fan, the air pump and the burner head form a burner unit which is clamped to a bracket 19 on the top of the fuel tank by two straps 26 interconnected by a tightening screw 28. The combustion chamber comprises a sleeve secured by fingers to a surrounding sleeve, the inlet end of the combustion chamber being closed by a plate having a central aperture defined by a conical portion of the plate, the outlet end being closed by a cone-shaped deflector plate 114 having outlets at its edge. The combustion chamber seats on a saddle-shaped bracket on the top of the fuel tank and is coupled to the burner unit by a bayonet joint comprising two studs on the burner unit engaging with notches in brackets on the plate at the inlet end of the combustion chamber. The fuel tank is made from two drawn sheet metal parts, one forming a rectangular tray 11, the other a cap 12 having a dependent flange which is secured to the rim of the tray by rivets; the joint is sealed by an epoxy resin. A U-shaped leg member 130 is secured by screws to each side of the fuel tank and a basket type handle 131 is secured to the leg members.
