Abstract

A starch paste is partially hydrolysed by an amylase enzyme, heated to a temperature sufficient to deactivate the enzyme, and then subjected to high shearing action at 260-300 DEG F. and at superatmospheric pressure. The aqueous starch paste or slurry may be heated with the enzyme (e.g. 0.009-0.0107%) by direct steam to 170 DEG F., the enzyme then being deactivated by direct steam heating to 220 DEG F. High shearing action may be applied by injecting steam at superatmospheric pressure into the paste. The product has low viscosity and high solids content, and is mixed with clay to form the adhesive paper coatings.
