Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formulae <FORM:1026403/C2/1> in which R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an aryl, aralkyl or acyl group, and R represents hydrogen or an alkyl group. These compounds (except where R = H) are prepared by reacting a Mannich base of the formula <FORM:1026403/C2/2> or <FORM:1026403/C2/3> in which R2 and R3 represent alkyl groups or together with the adjacent nitrogen atom form a piperidine ring, or a salt thereof, with a compound furnishing an anion R1S-. The anion R1S- may be supplied by an alkali metal salt of the appropriate thio compound or by the free thio compound under basic conditions. The compounds where R is an alkyl group are prepared by reacting a compound of Formula I or Formula IIa (in which R = H) with an etherifying agent, for example a diazoalkane. The compounds of Formula IIa where R = H are the enolic forms of compound of Formula I. 3-Amino-4-(S-benzyl-mercaptomethyl)-2-oxooxolene of the formula <FORM:1026403/C2/4> is prepared by reacting a compound of Formula I or its end, in which R1 represents a benzyl group, with ammonium acetate. Sodium thioacetate is prepared by adding thiolacetic acid to a solution of sodium in dry ethanol.
