Abstract

A light polarizing structure comprises (a) a film of light transmitting material containing randomly dispersed bubbles filled with gas of a different refractive index and flattened so that their largest cross-section is in a plane parallel with the plane of the film and (b) a transparent rigid supporting member attached to one face of the film. The film may be formed by extrusion of a foamed plastic of about 1.5 refractive index, e.g. polystyrene, a cellulose ester or polymethyl methacrylate to form an isotropic sheet 3-20 mils thick and containing bubbles 0.5-1.0 mil thick and 1.0 mil- 1/16 inch long at least 1 micron apart. In an embodiment of the invention shown in cross-section film 10 is supported by frame 14 between plates of transparent material 13 and 15 laminated to it. Adhesives may be used to stick 13 and 15 to 10 or 14. Where the light polarizing film is used with an exposed surface this may be coated, e.g. with a transparent epoxy-resin. Two or more films may be used together. The structure may be flame-resistant. A cylinder of the film may surround a fluorescent light.
