Heated pressure means 4, 5 (Fig. 1) press the folded end portions of a wrapper against the end of a wrapped tampon 1 which is carried in a guide sleeve 3 on a moving conveyer 2. In the embodiment described four guide sleeves 3 are provided near the circumference of an intermittently rotating disc 2. The plate 4 and 5 are attached to arms 6 and 7 which are rotated about pivots 28 and 29 to bring the plates into and out of contact with the ends of the tampons. When the plates are moved out of contact with the tampons the tampons may be ejected by plungers, or a pneumatic device Means may be provided for loading the tampons 1 into the guide sleeves 3. The guide sleeves 3 may be heated so that the tampons 1 are sterilized as they are carried round with the disc. The guide sleeves 3 may be closed at one end, and one of the heated plates 4 or 5 dispensed with. In an alternative embodiment the guide sleeves are secured to a moving endless conveyer and heated plungers are provided on opposite sides of the conveyer element at certain positions of the guide sleeve The heated pressure elements may also be in the form of jaws having apertures through which plunger type pressure elements can press the folded portions of the wrapper against the tampon ends. If the wrapper is made of heat sealable plastics material the heated pressure means may be used for sealing the end of the wrapper.
