Abstract

An aqueous glass sizing composition comprises 1-8% of a resinous binder, 0.3-2% of a resin to glass coupling agent, and 0.01-5% of a quaternary pyridinium compound. The resinous binder may be a vinyl, acrylate, styrene, acrylonitrile, butadiene, alkyd, epoxy, or phenol-formaldehyde resin; and may have been formed as an aqueous dispersion with a particle size of 0.1-5 microns. The coupling agent may be a silane, siloxane, basic chromium sulphate or chloride, or a methacrylic acid complex of chromic chloride. The pyridinium compound may be butyl, octyl, lauryl, or cetyl pyridinium chloride, cetyl 2-benzyl pyridinium bromide, dodecyl 3-ethyl pyridinium nitrate, dodecyl 4-methoxy pyridinium sulphate, octyl niacinium chloride, lauryl 2-picolinium chloride, or octyl 2,4-lutidinium chloride. The composition may also contain 0.5-5% of a plasticizer, 0.1-1% of a glass fibre softener, 0.01-1% of a cationic or non-ionic wetting agent, and 0.3-2% of a melamine-formaldehyde resin. The composition may have a total solid content of 2-10%, a surface tension of 25-35 dynes/sq. cm., a viscosity of 1-100 centipoises, and a pH of 3-8. 0.5-2% of size solid may be applied.ALSO:An aqueous glass sizing composition comprises 1-8% of a resinous binder, 0.3-2% of a resin coupling agent, and 0.01-5% of a quaternary pyridinium compound. The composition is used for sizing glass filaments to be used as reinforcement for resins and is applied to the extruded filaments before they are grouped together to form a strand. The composition may also contain 0.5-5% of a plasticiser, 0.1-1% of a glass fibre softener, 0.01-1% of a cationic or non-ionic wetting agent, and 0.3-2% of a melamine-formaldehyde resin. The composition may have a total solid content of 2-10%, a surface tension of 25-35 dynes/sq cm, a viscosity of 1-100 centipoises, and a pH of 3-8. 0.5-2% of size solid may be applied. The coated fibres after formation of strand may be dried at 275 DEG F for 8 hrs.
