In a system for measuring the length of a web, the web passes over a roller which has a mark co-operating with a magnetic sensor, photo-cell or proximity switch to produce one pulse per revolution of the roller, a pulse generator is triggered by each of these pulses to produce a train of pulses corresponding in number to the circumference of the roller, and a counter provides an indication of the length of the web. A printer may record the contents of the counter when the web is ejected from a rewinder. The counter may be prevented from operating if the web breaks or if the winder is not being driven.
