In a display cabinet having a plurality of shelves cooled by circulation of air over each shelf, the air is cooled bu an evaporator before being passed to each shelf. As illustrated, the cabinet comprises three shelves formed of metal sheets 8, 9 and 10 spaced from shelf bases 5, 6 and 7 to form air channels 12, 13, 14, and a metal sheet 11 spaced from the rear cabinet wall 1 to form a further air channel. A fan 22 withdraws air from the front edge of the shelf space A of the lowest shaft and passes it up the channel 15 and over an evaporator 21 to the top shelf space C. Cold air fills the space C and overflows into the channel 14 over a further evaporator 19 to a space B and thence over an evaporator 20 to the space A. Drip trays 24, 28 and 29 are provided below the evaporators, which may have heating devices for defrosting purposes. The metal sheets 9 and 10 are insulated on their sides confronting the bases 6 and 7 with rigid foam plastics and the front 7a of shelf 7b is formed of three transparent panes of glass or plastics. Mirrors 36 and 37 are provided to give improved vision into the upper shelf space C. Fluorescent tubes 30 and 34 are provided to illuminate the shelves and electric heating elements 31a, 32a are contained in the front edges of the shelves. Parts of the cabinet which tend to sweat, e.g. the undersides of shelf walls 6 and 7, mirror 37, front edges of air baffle sheets 25, 26 and 27 and the side walls of the cabinet may be heated above the cold air level in the shelf spaces. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a cabinet is provided having shelves on both sides of a common vertical air channel.
