[Also in Division E1] A connector for abutting structural members (Figs. 8 and 9) comprises a pair of coupling components 1, 11 with flat frictionally-engageable surfaces, each projecting from the abutment face of a respective member such as beams M, N, and both having bolt holes 4, 14 to be brought into register in the correctly assembled state of the members M, N, one hole, e.g. 4, being substantially larger than the other, and a bolt 6 to clamp the components so as to withstand a predetermined disruptive force or couple acting on the members M, N. The hole 4 is preferably of the order of twice the diameter of the bolt 6. Both of the components 1, 11 are of U-form and one is a snug fit within the limbs of the other, the holes being in interengageable yokes 2, 12 between the limbs which have outward flanges 3, 13 having a clearance therebetween when the components are clamped. A bolt carrying a nut 9 is placed between the beams M, N close to their top edges, with its threaded end in the hole 5 in the beam M and its head in the recess 15 in the beam N, the nut 9 being against a washer 10 around the hole 5. The gap between the beams M, N is filled with concrete or cement grouting. In another form (Figs. 10 and 14) there are two components 21, 27 and the component 21 in a beam N is downwardly open, its yoke resting on the corresponding edge of the tongue 27. The member 21 may also be tied to the beam N by means of a shear bar 25 welded thereto. The socket 21 has holes 30 registering with a hole in the tongue 27 for a bolt. The gap between the abutting surfaces is filled with concrete. Another embodiment relates to a friction grip connector as applied to a joint between an edge beam M and a floor slab N, both of precast concrete, wherein a pair of coupling flat tongues overlap in the assembled state of the members M, N, to which they are secured, and the mating edges of which are complementarily rebated, the beam M having a projecting head flush with its undersurface and the slab N having a similar head N flush with its upper surface for overlap on assembly. Both heads are interrupted by pockets around the tongues providing a clearance to tighten the clamping bolt. The upper gap between the components is finally filled with grout or dry mortar packing and the pockets with concrete. There may be additional holes for bolts in both components.
