Abstract

1,025,466. Determining direction acoustically. CSF-COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Jan. 7, 1963 [Jan. 12, 1962], No. 767/63. Heading H4D. A system for determining the direction of a sound source, e.g. a submarine, by means of a plurality of hydrophones mounted on the hull of a ship and making use of the different times of arrival of a sound wave at the various hydrophones comprises, as shown, thirty-six hydrophones H 1 ... H 36 producing signals clipped at upper and lower levels by clippers E 1 ... E 36 , the output of each clipper being connected to one hundred AND-circuits. These AND-circuits are each designated by two numerals, e.g. the AND-circuits associated with clipper E 1 have designations 1, 1 ... 1, 100 and those associated with clipper E 36 have designations 36, 1 ... 36, 100. The AND-circuits each have a further input d 1 ... d 100 connected, respectively, to pulse trains t 1 ... t 100 derived from a clock O, D comprising a generator O and a frequency divider D. These trains have a recurrence frequency of 1 kc.s and are stepped sequentially with respect to one another by 10 Ás. Each AND-circuit produces a signal in its output a when a signal from its clipper E coincides with a signal from the clock O, D. One hundred and twenty bearing, directions are chosen covering 360 degrees in 3-degree intervals and for each of these directions the output a of a particular AND-circuit associated with each hydrophone H will produce a signal. The thirty-six outputs a associated with each bearing direction are connected to one hundred and twenty counters C 1 ... C 120 through junction boxes G a1 ... G a120 . Thus a sound source located on any one of the one hundred and twenty directions will cause the counter C associated with that direction to count up to thirty-six. An integrator F 1 ... F 120 associated with each counter C 1 ... C 120 sums up the pulses for a given time interval, this summation being supplied to a threshold device S 1 ... S 120 such that when the threshold is exceeded the bearing direction is marked on a graph.
