Abstract

1,024,896. Unreeling wire. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Jan. 7, 1965 [Feb. 28, 1964], No. 8443/64. Heading B3E. An arrangement for uncoiling wire or like material from a spool by pulling the wire off one end of the spool through a wire guide displaced axially from this end of the spool is characterized in that the wire passes through a bore in a slidable member which can move between the end of the coiled wire and a stop member, the slidable member being biased towards the spool to a limited extent such that it may slide along the wire towards the spool only when that portion of the wire that it surrounds extends at less than a predetermined angle to the spool axis. Wire, e.g. steel wire for use in consumable electrode electric arc welding, is passed from the upper end of a coil 3 on a spool 1, between inner and outer rings 6, 7 resting on the coil end, through a bore in a steel ball 8, through a guide tube 11, over rolls 17, 14, 15, 16 to a straightener and wire feed device. A flanged member 9 secured to the upper end of the spool 1 acts as a stop for the ball 8.
