Abstract

Ammonium nitrate prills are produced by distributing an ammonium nitrate liquor of a concentration of 85-99% ammonium nitrate by weight and at a temperature of between 120-170 DEG C., in the form of an atomized spray on to an agitated bed of solid ammonium nitrate particles, e.g. less than 1.2 mm., which may be recycled off-size prills. The product may then be cooled to below 32 DEG C., dried, and cooled to ambient, and passed through a screen. A blasting composition comprises 94.5% of the ammonium nitrate prills, and 5.5% diesel oil (by weight).
