1,024,449. Internal shoe drum brakes; fluid pressure brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Feb. 4, 1965 [Jan. 14, 1964], No. 1661/64. Headings F2E and F2F. A brake shoe expending mechanism for internal shoe drum brakes comprising an actuator 16a slidable between the adjacent ends of the brake shoes or shoeoperating members 8 and 9 having complementary inclined surfaces 12, 17 with a roller 15 disposed between each pair of said surfaces, is characterized in that each roller has bearing portions 16 at its opposite ends located in roller-supporting slots 14 associated with the respective shoe or shoeoperating member. As shown, each roller is reduced at its opposite ends to provide the roller-bearing portions 16 which are located in a pair of slotted plates 13 secured to the respective tappet member 8 or 9, the slots extending parallel to the inclined surface 12 of the respective tappet. Alternatively, the slots 14 may be provided in the inner ends of the tappets. The actuator, which is operated by push-rod 7 of an air-operated servo-device 6 mounted on the brake back plate 1, has flaired portions 19 conforming to the roller diameters to engage the rollers against abutment surface 18 of the tappet housing 10 on retraction of the actuator, thereby aligning said rollers in the " brake off " position. As illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the tappet housing is mounted on the brake back plate between adjacent ends of a pair of shoes, thrust means, incorporating wearadjustment means, being disposed between the opposite pair of adjacent shoe ends. The actuator 16a may be operated mechanically.
