Abstract

Olefin oxides are produced by passing a stream of gas containing molecular oxygen through a liquid medium containing an organic solvent for the olefin and an oxidation catalyst soluble in the solvent, the solvent containing at least one component which is at least partially water-miscible, passing a mono-olefin into the liquid medium to react with the oxygen-containing gas, withdrawing liquid from the resulting reaction mixture, and recovering olefin oxide, other reaction products, unreacted olefin and solvent therefrom. Suitable catalysts are, for example, cobalt and manganese compounds. Suitable organic solvents are, for example, benzene, monochlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene and nitrobenzene and suitable partially water-miscible solvents are, for example, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, tertiary butyl alcohol and ethyl acetate. Examples are given of the oxidation of propylene and butene.
