Abstract

Insecticidal emulsions for use in treating paper are prepared by dissolving one or more of the insecticides Aldrin, Isodrin, Dieldrin and Endrin in a water-immiscible organic solvent and emulsifying the resultant solution in an aqueous solution of a surfactant and a phosphate selected from sodium tripolyphosphate, tetra-sodium pyrophosphate and sodium hexametaphosphate. Specified organic solvents are ethylene dichloride carbon tetrachloride, acetone, benzene and xylene. Specified surfactants are alkylarylsulphonates, alkyl phenol sulphonates, alkyl sulphates and amine salts thereof, ethylene oxide-polypropylene glycol condensates. The emulsion may contain thickeners e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl cellulose. The emulsions may be added to the paper pulp during stock preparation and fixed on the pulp fibres by the addition of aluminium sulphate. A synthetic resin may also be added to the pulp.ALSO:Insecticidal emulsions are prepared by dissolving one or more of the insecticides Aldrin, Isodrin, Dieldrin and Endrin in a water-immiscible organic solvent and emulsifying the resultant solution in an aqueous solution of a surfactant and a phosphate selected from sodium tripolyphosphate, tetra-sodium pyrophosphate and sodium hexametaphosphate. Specified organic solvents are ethylene dichloride, carbon tetrachloride, acetone, benzene and xylene. Specified surfactants are alkylaryl sulphonates, alkyl phenol sulphonates, alkyl sulphates and amine salts thereof, ethylene oxidepolypropylene glycol condensates. The emulsion may contain thickeners e.g. hydroxyethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol and carboxymethyl cellulose. The emulsions may be added to the paper pulp during stock, preparation and fixed on the pulp fibres by the addition of aluminium sulphate. A synthetic resin may also be added to the pulp. The emulsions may be coated or impregnated on paper, cardboard and other materials used in packaging to form cartons and paper bags.
