During downward movement by an endless belt conveyer 16 in a dish-washing machine, baskets 10 containing the articles to be washed are sprayed by jets 26, 27 of pre-rinsing and washing liquid, respectively, and whilst moving horizontally are sprayed by jets 35 of rinsing liquid before moving upwardly through a drying zone to be treated by jets of hot air supplied by a fan heater 43 through nozzles 47. The conveyer comprises a pair of belts, the speeds of which are maintained equal by the engagement of teeth 17 thereon with driving sprockets 15, and which have projections 18 for engagement by inverted V-shaped lugs 22 at each side of each basket 10. At the inlet opening 6 of the machine a basket 10 is held by spring pressed catches 23 until these are released by the projections 18, and at the outlet opening 7 the baskets 10 are held by spring pressed catches 25 until removed by hand. Water discharged by the pre-rinsing jets is collected in the imperforated tray bottom 48 of each basket 15 to be discharged through a spout 49 and a vertical slot 51 in a chamber 51 into a drain 52. This water is replaced by water supplied to the rinsing jets 35 through a heater 37, whilst water discharged by jets 27 and 35 is filtered by a mesh 34 and re-circulated by a pump 31. The sprays may be controlled by cocks tripped by the moving baskets, and the operation of the machine may be stopped automatically by the arrival of the last basket at the outlet 7.
